.357 Magnum / .38 Special

History & Design Intent

The .38 Special debuted in 1898; in 1934 Smith & Wesson and Winchester lengthened its case and raised pressures to create the .357 Magnum, the first true "Magnum" handgun cartridge. The longer case prevents the higher-pressure Magnum round from chambering in older .38 Special revolvers, while .38 Special still fires safely in any .357 Magnum gun.

Operational Profile

A 125–158 grain bullet from a .357 Magnum can exceed 1,400 fps, giving decisive defensive and field performance with sharp recoil; .38 Special is the mild, easy-shooting practice and carry load in the same gun. The pairing remains a classic revolver combination for shooters who want one platform with two power levels.
