History & Design Intent

John Browning designed the .45 ACP in 1904–05 around the pistol that became the M1911, answering U.S. Army demand for a hard-hitting service round. The older .45 Colt dates to 1873 and the Single Action Army revolver — two iconic American .45-bore cartridges separated by three decades of design.

Operational Profile

The .45 ACP throws a heavy 230-grain bullet at a subsonic ~830 fps — a big, slow projectile prized for low muzzle blast and proven defensive performance. The .45 Colt remains a stalwart of cowboy-action shooting and revolver hunting. Both favor bullet mass over velocity.
