History & Design Intent

The .355-inch bore is shared by the 9×19mm Parabellum (Georg Luger, 1901) and the smaller .380 ACP (John Browning, 1908). Browning sized the .380 as a low-recoil, blowback-friendly self-defense round for compact pistols, while the 9mm grew into the dominant service-pistol cartridge.

Operational Profile

Both are .355-bore handgun rounds: the .380 ACP is a softer-shooting pocket-pistol cartridge, while the 9×19mm balances magazine capacity, controllable recoil, and effective modern defensive performance. Together they cover most of the concealed-carry and service-pistol market.
