9mm Luger (9×19mm Parabellum)

History & Design Intent

Georg Luger designed the 9×19mm Parabellum in 1901 for the pistol that bears his name, necking up his earlier 7.65mm round to a straighter 9mm case. Over the following century it became the NATO-standard handgun cartridge and the most widely produced centerfire pistol round on earth.

Operational Profile

A 115–147 grain bullet at roughly 1,050–1,250 fps gives the 9mm an exceptional balance of magazine capacity, controllable recoil, and — with modern expanding bullets — strong defensive performance. It is the default chambering for service, concealed-carry, and competition pistols worldwide.

9mm Luger (9×19mm Parabellum)

The 9mm Luger is the most widely used handgun cartridge in the world. If you've heard it called 9×19mm, 9mm Parabellum, 9mm NATO, or just "nine," those all describe the same round. It fires a 0.355-inch (9.01mm) bullet and has been the default service-pistol chambering across most of the globe for over a century. Everything on this page — the velocity, energy, and trajectory figures for each load — is computed from published manufacturer data, not estimates.

A short history

Austrian designer Georg Luger developed the cartridge around 1901 and it was introduced by the German firm DWM (Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken) for his new Luger pistol. The name "Parabellum" comes from DWM's telegraph address, drawn from the Latin maxim si vis pacem, para bellum — "if you want peace, prepare for war." Adopted by the German navy and army in the years that followed, the 9×19mm went on to arm militaries through two world wars.

Its modern dominance came later. NATO standardized the 9×19mm as a service-pistol cartridge (under STANAG 4090), and the United States — long committed to the .45 ACP — formally transitioned with the adoption of the Beretta M9 in 1985, and again with the SIG Sauer-based M17/M18 service pistols decades later. Today the 9mm is the standard for the majority of police and military handgun users, alongside being the best-selling cartridge for civilian defense and sport.

Bullet weights: what 115, 124, and 147 grains actually mean

Most 9mm ammunition is loaded with one of three bullet weights, and the differences are practical rather than dramatic. Muzzle energy across all three is surprisingly close — typically in the 300–400 ft-lb range — but they deliver it differently:

There is no universally "best" weight. The right answer depends on the gun, the barrel length, and the job — defense, competition, training, or suppressed use.

Supersonic vs. subsonic — and why it matters for suppressors

The speed of sound at sea level is roughly 1,125 feet per second. A bullet traveling faster than that produces a small sonic "crack" downrange — independent of the muzzle blast a suppressor reduces. That's why heavier 147-grain loads, which leave the muzzle below the sound barrier, are favored for suppressed shooting: a suppressor can meaningfully quiet a subsonic round in a way it cannot fully quiet a supersonic one.

This matters more in 2026 than it has in decades. As of January 1, 2026, the federal transfer tax (the "tax stamp") on suppressors dropped from $200 to $0, removing a long-standing financial barrier to ownership — though suppressors remain federally regulated and still require the full ATF transfer process and a background check, and state law varies. The practical effect is a surge of interest in suppressors and, with it, in subsonic 9mm. (For suppressor fitment and acoustic detail, that's a separate topic from ballistics.)

How to read the numbers on this page

Each load's figures are anchored to the manufacturer's published muzzle velocity, measured from a standardized test barrel — for 9mm, a 4-inch barrel. Two things to keep in mind:

Practical notes

The 9mm is a short-range cartridge by design; bullet drop is negligible at typical defensive distances and only becomes meaningful past about 50 yards. For practice, lighter full-metal-jacket loads are economical and abundant. For defense, the choice among quality hollow-point loads matters far less than reliability in your specific firearm and your ability to shoot it well — test any defensive load in your own gun before trusting it.
